Dean, Michael
Communication (and its failures) lies at the heart of Michael Dean’s work. The rather wordy repetitive title here are typical, they become awkward to read or to say out loud, they ask the viewer to do the work, raising questions about naming.
Writing is an essential part of Dean’s work. This sculpture – one of a series – began as a minimal letter-form invented by the artist, translated into a mould from which the concrete sculpture was cast. Although concrete is a robust material, Dean’s works are surprisingly delicate, fragile and human.
