St. Mary's No. 1

1978
Evans, Garth
St. Mary's No.1 comes towards the end of a series of works that began in 1969-70 when I found I wanted to make something that came within my definition of 'sculpture', yet which did not, somehow, offer itself to the viewer as an object. St. Mary's No.1 represents, in many ways, the culmination of this effort – to produce a 'sculpture' that was not an 'object'. While there is much order within it, it offers itself as almost completely random. While it has a peculiar presence, it does not seem to exist (quite) in space. It is visually complex but conceptually simple. It appears weightless. Garth Evans
