Rachel Whiteread

Untitled (6 Spaces)

1994

Rachel Whiteread’s sculptures are often constructed from 'negative spaces'. As she explains: ‘I use a direct casting technique to reveal the negative, manipulating apparently mundane domestic items to produce pieces that surpass their original identity. I think there is a correlation between these domestic items and our physicality’.

Untitled (6 Spaces) is one of a number of works in which Whiteread has created subtly coloured, resin cubes by casting the voids under different chairs. In this way, the artist preserves her childhood hiding places, turning negative space into positive sculptural mass. The rungs of the chair appear as channels on the surface and the semi-transparent material allows light to play a role in our understanding of these internal/external structures.
