BLOOD TEARS FAITH DOUBT
BLOOD TEARS FAITH DOUBT: Historical and Contemporary Encounters
The Courtauld Gallery, Somerset House
17 June - 18 July 2010
This Select exhibition, curated by eleven students on the MA Curating the Art Museum programme at the Courtauld Institute of Art, draws parallels between historical and contemporary works of art which address themes of suffering, faith, devotion and doubt. The selected works are either examples from the Western tradition of religious art, or works which, in various ways, make reference to that tradition. Bringing together a range of paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and works on paper from the holdings of both the Courtauld Gallery and Arts Council Collection, the exhibition's intention is to stage two encounters: the first, between the works themselves; the second, between the works and the viewer, whose emotive response they directly elicit.
