Nunnington Hall, North Yorkshire
22 September – 1 November 2009
Past Present was an exhibition of contemporary art from the Arts Council Collection, displayed within Nunnington Hall, a splendid Yorkshire Manor House built in the 17th century and substantially modernised during the 1920s. The selected artists work across a wide range of media from sculpture to film and represent the breadth and diversity of British art practice today.
In each room an original piece of furniture, ceramic, textile or domestic item was temporarily removed and replaced with a contemporary piece, creating a series of playful interventions to be discovered by each visitor. Each work was very different however they were all connected through similar themes such as family and domesticity; identity, memory, childhood and the progression of time. The interplay of the contemporary amongst the familiar and everyday suggests juxtapositions and new references to both. Nunnington Hall created a visual and thought-provoking environment for this exhibition.
