Chessmen

1965
Creffield, Dennis
The experience of studying under the influential painter David Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic between 1948 and 1951, made a strong impact on Dennis Creffield's early work, judging from the expressionistic brushstrokes in works such as 'Chessmen'. When Creffield moved to Brighton to teach at the College of Art in 1968, he took a studio on Marine Parade; his palette brightened and his work took on a more lyrical quality. Ann Jones
