Landscape

1958
Barclay, Colville
An MI6 spy during the war, Barclay enjoyed a successful career as a naturalist and artist, exhibiting in the annual Royal Academy shows during the 1950s and 60s. Although entitled 'Landscape', like many of Barclay's works, the representational nature of this painting is not immediately evident. However, looking more closely, the lower two-thirds are divided into a patchwork of blues, yellows, whites and reds, whereas passages of pale blue and white cross the upper third of the canvas suggesting sky broken by cloud.
