Marker 240

2020
Chua, Nina
Nina Chua makes drawings, predominantly using marker pen on paper. Varied in style and form, her works propose different ways of thinking about drawing, while maintaining an emphasis on their aesthetic qualities. Marker 240, 2020, was started a year or so prior to completion, when Chua first applied layers of colourful scribbles. After a period of time the artist returned to the piece, and worked over the original drawing with new, differing marks. She did not have a clear sense of how the drawing would end up until the very last mark, and at times, wanted to discard it. By pushing mark-making beyond her artistic intention, the drawing became something in its own right, visually distinct within her oeuvre.
