2003 - Spotlight on Douglas Gordon

CROQUE MORT

Touring Exhibition

Exhibitions from the 'Spotlight' series often focused on a group of works, however this show explored just one work, Croque Mort, 2000, by the Glasgow and New York-based artist, Douglas Gordon. Croque Mort comprises seven large colour photographs of a baby biting her toes. Taken in close-up and installed in a blood-red gallery, the series focuses on the image of a body biting itself. The sense of unease is emphasised by the title, which refers to an old French term for mortician, deriving from the practice of biting the toes of a corpse to check it was really dead.
