On Paper

This book focusses on art that looks at paper beyond its typical use as a medium merely employed to draw, paint or print on. From corrugated card to graphic and blotted paper, On Paper explores the breadth of the material and its application by modern and contemporary artists.

Artists have used paper as a construction material, something that can be creased and manipulated to create sculptural forms. Examples include Karla Black’s delicate hanging structures made from sugar paper, hair gel and chalk, Lesley Foxcroft’s two-tone corrugated bricks and Gareth Jones’ cloakroom ticket cape. Also featured are works which have been burnt, torn and cut by artists such as Roger Ackling, Cornelia Parker and Simon Periton.

On Paper will also include a collection of collages by Roland Penrose, Eduardo Paolozzi, John Stezaker and Tony Swain, as well as paper works which have been rubbed, folded and embossed by artists such as Anna Barriball and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Including an original text by writer Ian Sansom, On Paper offers a new perspective on a common material, displaying some of the most creative applications of the medium.
