Teacher Study Day: Curiosity and Wonder

17 June 2023
The Arts Council Collection : Teacher Study Day: Curiosity and Wonder

Back by popular demand! The Arts Council Collection and Yorkshire Sculpture Park invite education professionals to an inspiring study day focussed on YSP’s summer theme: Curiosity and Wonder. There will be a special focus on the work of artist Lindsey Mendick whose work is held in the Arts Council Collection, and whose exhibition Where the Bodies are Buried is currently on display in The Weston Gallery.

Chaired by Susan M Coles, Artist and Arts Creativity and Educational Consultant, this engaging day will explore the relationship between curiosity and creativity, and take you down an Alice in Wonderland rabbit hole. Alice's curiosity is what leads her down the rabbit hole in the first place, and it's what keeps her exploring and questioning everything she encounters, so what’s our own need to be like her and how can we do this?

During the morning session you will have the opportunity to explore the Arts Council Collection, with a small display of artworks at Longside Gallery. Taking inspiration from the approaches the artists have taken in exploring ceramic as a medium, you will be guided through a clay workshop with artist Hannah Way to explore several processes to making with clay that you can take back to the classroom.

The afternoon session will be led by artist Desmond Brett, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art (Sculpture) at Norwich University of the Arts. You will experiment with sculpture making through a process-led approach, without worrying about a final outcome. The possibilities and limits of sculpture making will be explored through material-led enquiry, with practical activities and prompts that are immediately applicable to a school setting. The day will close with an active plenary chaired by Susan M Coles.
