Study for 'Sur la Terrace'

1971
Hockney, David
On a trip in 1971 to Marrakesh, Morocco, Hockney made drawings and took photographs for his planned painting, 'Sur la terrasse'. The painting features Hockney's lover, Peter Schlesinger. He is shown from behind, standing on the terrace of their hotel, looking into the distance. Hockney was reluctantly filmed working on this loosely painted study in A Bigger Splash, a film by Jack Hazan. Although Schlesinger’s features are not shown, his distinctive hair conveys his character.
