Criminal Ornamentation: Yinka Shonibare MBE
Celebrated British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare (MBE) is renowned for his use of colour and pattern in works that often play with ideas of cultural appropriation. Shonibare has long been interested in exploring art historical and postcolonial themes whilst pushing the boundaries of accepted ‘good taste’.
This publication gives a unique insight into his world-view. Provocatively riffing on Adolf Loos’s highly influential and vehemently anti-decoration Ornament and Crime(1908), Shonibare selects works from the Arts Council Collection and beyond that might make Loos furious – but which surprise, dazzle, and make us think. Ranging from sculpture to painting, from wallpaper to handbags, through these works he tells a story of an art-world that refuses to be confined.
